The value left behind in plantain and banana farming

In plantain and banana cultivation across Nigeria, the farmer harvests the fruit bunch and discards the pseudostem that carried it. That stem is made up of long natural fibre, cell sap and cellulose. It is renewed with every harvest, it is produced continuously across the region, and at present it is a cost to the farmer rather than an asset, because the labour of clearing it comes out of the same household budget.

Greenroot Organic Plants Products Ltd sits at the processing and manufacturing end of that value chain. We do not farm. We buy the stem, process it, and convert one biological input into a range of industrial and retail products, currently eleven lines. Where a line is better made by hand than by machine, we train community producers to make it at home and buy back what they produce.

A separate company from ECO-FIP

Greenroot shares leadership and natural fibre expertise with ECO-FIP NIG. LTD, but it is a separate legal entity with its own registration (RC 9154625), its own product range, its own operator model and its own farmer buyback network, based at 86 PDP Road, Yenizuegene, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Nigeria. Contracts, assets and accounts are not shared between the two companies.

Where we are today

Greenroot is early stage. We have a full business plan lodged with the Technology Incubation Centre in Yenagoa under the National Board for Technology Incubation, and an active proposal to establish constituency production and training centres. Capacity, grades and lead times are confirmed per enquiry rather than advertised, and we would rather tell a buyer what we can actually deliver this month than lose them later.
