How the loop works
- Stems bought from farmers Plantain and banana farmers sell the fruit bunch and are left with the stem. Greenroot registers those households and buys the stem, at rates published ahead of each buying season.
- Processing into fibre and pulp Mechanical decortication, washing, drying and grading produce construction fibre, pulp for paper, and residue that becomes mushroom substrate.
- Manufacturing, at the centre and at home The centre runs the machine lines. Trained community producers make bags, mats, footwear and cushions at home from starter kits, and Greenroot buys the qualifying output.

Why the stem is worth buying
A plantain farmer earns once, from the bunch. The stem that carried it then has to be cut down and cleared, which costs the household labour and returns nothing. Left on the farm it rots, breeds pests near dwellings and releases methane.
Processed instead, that same stem yields long natural fibre, pulp and organic substrate. Buying it gives the farming household a second income from a plant it has already harvested, and gives Greenroot a renewable raw material that is produced continuously across the region.
